The time tested and still finest composting method.

You can buy a hundred different systems to help you make compost.   All of them subject to some kind of problem and will eventually end up in the garbage or sitting on the corner of your lot rusting.  I still use the three bin system.  It may take a little time to build but the cost is very minimal.

There are several advantages to using the three bin system:

  • You will always be able to visually check your compost.
  • The bins allow much more space so that you are able to compost large quantities of biodegradable material.  I compost all of my leaves and many of my neighbors leaves.  I spread some of the leaves on the garden for the winter and then compost those as the weather warms up in the spring.
  • The three bins allow you to constantly be finishing compost without waiting for all of the materials to be ready at the same time.  It is the only way to finish a large quantity of material over a relatively short time.
  • I love to work the compost by turning it with a fork, chopping up the harder materials, moving it to the second bin and then sifting it through the quarter inch steel mesh.  The physical work itself is therapeutic and life sustaining.  Creating a healthy compost is good for the soil, good for the planet and good for the soul.

I hope this video will help you better understand how this three bin system works. Feel free to call me if you have any questions.  859-684-5890
